Curators Announce Hiring of Lewis Rice to Lead “Review”
By The K.C. Globe Staff
01/18/24--Some students at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo. on Tuesday, January 16, braved the cold weather at a “silent protest” inside Young Hall, calling for the termination of President Dr. John B. Moseley, following the reported suicide death last Monday, January 8 of Dr. Antoinette Candia Bailey, then vice president of student affairs. Her death was officially announced in a statement issued by the university on Wednesday, January 10, but questions surrounding her death had already gone viral on social media and throughout the university community, with many seeking answers and calling for “accountability.”
Nell Cheatham, president of the Greater St. Louis chapter of the LU Alumni Association sent out an e-mail on Saturday, Jan. 13, urging alumni to support students in their protests.
Since Bailey’s death was officially reported last week, Moseley volunteered to be placed on leave while the board of curators engages a “third” party to “fully review potential personnel issues and concerns recently raised regarding compliance with the University’s established policies and procedures,” the curators announced last week.
After Tuesday’s student protests, the students returned Wednesday to protest. Afterward, a few of them were invited to a “listening” session before university leaders.
Meanwhile as the university’s curators and administrators scramble to quell the firestorm of criticism from some of the students and members of the LU’s alumni association (Bailey was an alumna), alleged details that contributed to Candia-Bailey’s decision to commit suicide continue to surface.
According to a KOMU 8 story on Wednesday, “The president of the Lincoln Alumni Association shared an email with KOMU 8 that Candia-Bailey allegedly sent before she died. That email went to Moseley, alumni and other faculty, and included accusations against Moseley of bullying and harassment. The email came after Candia-Bailey was fired from the university.”
