Resurrection, St. James UMC Host Juneteenth Celebration Event Will be at Resurrection Lee’s Summit Saturday, June 20

Allies for Racial Justice, a partnership between Resurrection, A United Methodist Church, and St. James United Methodist Church, will host Let Freedom Sing, an annual Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 20, at 4 p.m. at Resurrection Lee’s Summit located at 350 MO-150 in Lee’s Summit, MO. 

 

Juneteenth commemorates the end of chattel slavery in the United States, and the celebration will honor the occasion with an afternoon of historical insights, music, dance and song featuring: 

  • A presentation by professor and historian Dr. James Leiker on The Underground Railroad: How Free was Kansas?
  • Performances by award-winning musician Isaac Cates and One AcCORd; soloist Devion Williams, and Kim Jones Praising Grace Dance Team. 
  • A special exhibit titled The Hidden History of the Black West that expands the story beyond what most history books tell. 

This family-friendly event is free and open to all and offers a meaningful way to mark a day that changed American history. The exhibit opens at 3:30 pm, with the program beginning at 4 pm
