Kansas City, MO— Following the news of the Kansas City Chiefs’ decision to not renew their lease after the 2030 season at the Truman Sports Complex’s Arrowhead Stadium, located in the 3rd District of Kansas City, MO, Third District at-Large Councilwoman Melissa Patterson Hazley released the following statement:
“The Truman Sports Complex has long been a cornerstone of Kansas City’s Third District and a source of pride for Jackson County residents. Like many, I learned the game of football from my single mom who is a die hard Chiefs’ fan although we could not afford to attend any games. News of the Chiefs’ intention to leave Arrowhead and cross the state line understandably brings overwhelming disappointment and strong emotions for many in our community.
My immediate focus is ensuring that the voices of residents, neighborhoods, and local businesses remain front and center in this conversation. Decisions of this magnitude cannot happen in isolation, and the people most connected to this area deserve to be heard and considered every step of the way.
I have begun coordinating with local and regional partners, including leaders in Independence, Missouri and my counterpart in the Jackson County Legislature, to understand potential impacts and identify pathways forward that protect our community’s interests. I want to ensure that the Truman Sports Complex remains an asset for Kansas City.
Should the team ultimately vacate, I, like many of you will mourn “The Home of The Chiiieeefffss.” This is a difficult moment that calls for leadership, coordination, and creativity. I am committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure the Third District remains positioned for future growth.”
