‘RUN IT BACK’: Reigning Champs Return to Super Bowl

The Kansas City Chiefs are on a quest for a third World Championship as they face Tom Brady and the Tampa BayBuccaneers in Super Bowl LV set to be played Sunday, Feb.  7. The Chiefs, last year, won Super Bowl LIV against the San Francisco 49ers, breaking a 50 year dearth since its first win of Super Bowl 4 in 1970.

Chiefs’ Coach Andy Reid and Hunt Family team owners, ‘RUN IT BACK’: Reigning Champs Return to Super Bowl opting to keep both offensive and defensive teams intact following last year’s victory, are believed to have erected a dynasty that, barring injuries, guarantees the team will be a reckoning force and a formidable foe in the near foreseeable future. In fact, early-on in the 2020 season, team members adopted the mantra, “Run it Back.”

This will be the third appearance for the Chiefs in a Super Bowl, having lost their first bid for the top spot to the Green Bay Packers in 1967, before the championship games were christened with its current title, coined by Lamar Hunt and first used in the 1970 competition. It retroactively was applied to the previous three games, before then simply referred to as the NFL-AFL Championship.

This will be a “grudge match” of sorts as the Chiefs go up against Brady, who two years ago led the New England Patriots which in the AFC Championship game beat the Kansas City Chiefs in overtime 37-31, bumping the Chiefs out of Super Bowl LIII. It was Patrick Mahomes’ first year as starting Quarterback with the Chiefs, and he never got the chance to answer since the Patriots won the toss and scored. In an interview after Sunday’s game Mahomes commented on getting a chance to return back to the Super Bowl where he is hoping to get a Super Bowl win against Brady.

Mahomes said,”being able to go up against one of the greatest if not the greatest quarterbacks of all time” is going to be a great experience for him.

“To go out there and get to have a chance to repeat and get to do it against the best, I mean it’s something special and I’m excited for the opportunity,” he said.

The Chiefs advance to the 2021 Super Bowl game , having secured a back-to-back AFC Championship victory in a crushing defeat of the Buffalo Bills, 38-24. The Chiefs are now launching themselves toward their second straight Super Bowl, which will be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay. That city’s Buccaneers will be the first team to play a Super Bowl in its home stadium.

Tampa Bay advanced to the Super Bowl after beating the Green Bay Packers, 31 to 26, after a closely competitive matchup pitting Brady against Aaron Rogers . Having won, Brady will now be playing in his 10th Super Bowl, having made nine previous appearances as a Patriot. This will be the Buccaneers’ first time playing a Super Bowl game in its home stadium.

Sunday’s AFC Championship victory for Kansas City retained the Lamar Hunt trophy, named for the former Chiefs’ owner who started the Super Bowl and gave it its name five decades ago. It returned to Kansas City last year with their AFC victory.

The Super Bowl championship game will be played at Tampa Bay and televised nationally by CBS (5:30 p.m. CST) with country music singer Eric Church and R & B singer Jazmine Sullivan performing the national anthem. The halftime show will be headlined by Canadian singer The Weeknd.
