John Thompson, literally a towering figure in the college sports basketball arena has died at 78. He was the first African-American coach to lead the Georgetown University basketball his team to the NCAA championship. The 6 foot-10, nearly 300 pounds Thompson “possessed a booming bass voice that commanded authority better than a shrill whistle could,” as reported in The Washington Post.
