A white KCMO Councilman, Teresa Loar, apologized today (Thursday) to her council colleagues and specifically to Melissa Robinson, who is black, for racially insensitive remarks she made to Robinson during a City Council meeting last Thursday, July 23.

Today’s apology comes after mounting pressure that both Loar and Mayor Quinton Lucas received from local civil rights groups including The Urban League of Greater Kansas City, the SCLC of Greater Kansas City and the KCMO NAACP. These groups called for Lucas to remove Loar as chair of the city’s Transportation Committee.

During today’s Council meeting Lucas also apologized for not responding sooner in addressing the issue and he asked Loar to undergo diversity training in the next seven days for mocking a black colleague during a public meeting. However, following the meeting, Lucas reportedly said he had no plans to strip Loar of the committee chairmanship.
