Jackson County on Wednesday released to Kansas City $18 million in federal CARES Aid for COVID-19 relief, far short of the $27.6 million it initially said would be allotted and further still than the $54 million Mayor Quinton Lucas last June said was the equitable portion due the city based on revised 2018 U.S. Census population statistics.

The Kansas City Council’s Finance, Governance and Public Safety committee immediately met the same day, debating for more than an hour, deciding how best to salvage the city, unanimously voting for $23.6 million in budget cuts. This translates to a 4.5% cut for most departments, but to smaller cuts for public safety.
