The Kansas City Globe learned late Thursday after press time that Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas had suspended with pay City Manager Brian Platt from his position. Lucas has named Assistant City Manager Kimiko Gilmore to become interim city manager.

The news came via a copy of Lucas’ suspension letter to Platt that was released to media. Reportedly, Lucas had the support of the City Council in making the decision to suspend Platt.

According to a KCUR news story, “The move comes the day after a jury ordered the city to pay more than $900,000 to Chris Hernandez, the city’s former director of communications, in a whistleblower lawsuit he brought against Kansas City. Hernandez alleged he was forced out of his job because he resisted Platt’s suggestions that it’s okay for city officials to lie to the media.
