Kansas City, Missouri - aSTEAM Village and Zhou Brothers Kansas City Art Center are proud to announce a Breakfast and Film Screening of “The SPACE RACE; The Untold Story of the First Black Astronauts” on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at 8:00 AM. The event will be held at the new $21 million dollar Zhou Brothers Kansas City Art Center located at 3600 E. Linwood Blvd, Kansas City, MO 64128.
“The SPACE RACE; The Untold Story of the First Black Astronauts” is a documentary film directed by Lisa Cortés and Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. The film travels back through history with a collection of archive films and interviews, uncovering the social and racial barriers it took for the first Black pilots to reach space. The documentary reveals new hidden figures who took one step for man and a giant leap for the Black pilots who helped propel mankind.
The event will begin with a breakfast reception at 8:00 AM, followed by the film screening at 8:30 AM. The film screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the film’s director, Lisa Cortés.
“We are excited to host this event and bring attention to the untold stories of the first Black pilots who helped shape the future of space exploration,” said William Wells, Founder and Executive Director of aSTEAM Village.
At the conclusion of the movie, VIP tours can be scheduled for the internationally respected Zhou B. Art Center which opened this January in the Historic 18th & Vine Jazz District. The Zhou B. Art Center includes 45 art studios, indoor and outdoor event spaces, a sculpture garden, a kitchen, and a lounge. The Institute of Black Inventions and Technology will also be exhibiting as TIBIT and aSTEAM Village have come together on a project to open a permanent museum exhibit for Black Inventions and Technology.
